3 not so traditional mooncakes to try this year

Mooncakes season is upon us. As an expat, I’m always keen on learning more and experiencing local traditions but I have to say, despite many attempts and no matter how cute I find them, mooncakes are usually not something I’m too excited about. I guess the traditional ones are just not to my taste. I thought you might be just like me, willing to take part to the lunar appreciation festivities and enjoy your share of local traditions but looking for mooncakes which could please your expat palates so here I am, sharing three mooncakes options which are not the very traditional ones.

Vegan mooncakes

Why we like it: because it’s surprisingly yummy (and we don’t often say that of a mooncake) while being loaded with superfood and containing 40% less calories than traditional mooncakes (God, if you ever wonder how many calories there are in a mooncake just don’t check, believe me better not knowing!). Our fav is the Dark Chocolate & Sichuan Chili Pepper with its rich filling and spicy kick.

What: an assortment of ganaches and pralines in dark and milk chocolate
PASSION MOON: Delicate dark chocolate ganache bouchée with passion fruit and vanilla
SWEET MOON: Milk chocolate praline bouchée with roasted hazelnuts
DARK MOON: Pure Brazilian dark chocolate ganache
GOLDEN MOON: Delicate caramelized mousse coated with dark chocolate
 
Why we like it: because it’s not so mooncaky but more chocolate and not just any chocolate but the one from La Maison du Chocolat … pure treat!

What: four mooncakes delicately stamped with the Pierre Hermé logo or a stylized flower and presented in a box designed by artist and set designer Marjorie Colas

Why we like it: it’s very chic with the embossed “P” and minimalist box, its traditional yes but with a modern twist to it
