Croque: Affordable French fast-food worth indulging in
by Aude Camus

Embracing my undeniable French stereotype, one thing stands out about me—I have an unwavering obsession with bread. Whether it's the iconic baguette, the comforting sourdough, or a simple yet satisfying sandwich, my love affair with bread is both undeniable and essential. It comes as no surprise, then, that the croque-monsieur holds a special place as one of my cherished indulgences. I mean, who could resist the allure of a French ham and cheese toasted sandwich? So, when whispers of a croque-monsieur joint opening in Hong Kong reached my ears, the anticipation soared. Let me share my experience visiting the newly opened Croque—yes, it lived up to the hype, and it's bound to delight anyone craving affordable, delicious, and uncomplicated French fare on the go.

"CROQUE was founded on our belief that there is a high demand for the joy of savoring French-inspired sandwiches that are both high in quality and affordable in Hong Kong. Our menu is crafted to cater to this demand, and we have exciting plans to expand with more locations" say co-founders, Clément Jacquel and Rémi Brunet – former managers at Michelin-starred restaurant Louise.

With a modern twist on French traditions, Croque’s sandwiches - priced between HKD 88 to HKD 148, are a fusion of quality and affordability.

Classic Croque Monsieur (HKD 88)
Tested, and approved
Ham, emmental cheese, and Mornay béchamel sauce. This classic is perfectly executed, delivering a deliciously nostalgic treat for those, like me, who can't resist the charm of a well-made croque monsieur.

Captain Hook (HKD 128)
Tested, and approved
Smoked salmon, horseradish cream, spinach, topped with salmon roe. The unique appeal of the Captain Hook lies in its uncooked ingredients, creating a delightful interplay between the warm, soft bread, the refreshing marine essence of the salmon, and the crunchiness of the spinach.

Angry Duck (HKD 128)
Homemade confit duck, emmental cheese, confit shallots, and orange balsamic sauce.

Mister Truffle (HKD 138)
PLANTIN truffle, cooked ham, Saint Nectaire cheese, and luscious Mornay béchamel sauce.

Also earning my stamp of approval is La Croque Vita (HKD 128) – a flavourful combination of mortadella, stracciatella, sundried tomatoes, pesto, and roasted pistachio.

Sides to savour

French fries, Truffle fries, fresh coleslaw, tomato pesto, and cucumber with sesame (all priced at HKD 40). Opt for combo options (add HKD 48 with any sandwich) that include a side and beverage for a complete meal experience.

Sweet endings

Indulge your sweet tooth with tempting desserts like homemade French Toast Brûlé with whipped mascarpone cream (HKD 78) and Hokkaido Milk Sundae (HKD 68).
