Did you travel for the Golden Week? I did! You know me by now, I love food, beauty products and cute things so you won’t be surprised to hear I was eager to discover Seoul which I did and guess what … I had a blast. If you have been there already you know that street food in Seoul is definitely a thing. And if you haven’t been yet 1. You definitely should 2. Better be prepared to eat more than your share of Korean food.
I don’t know about you but when it comes to eating local food I am always afraid of ending up in some tourist traps and eat something which looks like local food but ain’t really. Best is when you know someone living in the city/country who can take you to some real local places. Eat like a local, that’s my motto. I do not know anyone living in Seoul and was therefore super happy when Flight Centre Hong Kong and Urban Adventures offered me to dig into authentic Korean food with a local guide. Are you ready for the tour?
Meeting point is at Gwanghwamun Station at 6 pm. Close from the major touristic attractions, it is super easy to find even if you have only been in the city for a few hours. I was actually super relieved to meet our super friendly English speaking guide Jessie. I am always a little bit afraid in those kind of situations that everyone will get shy and things will end up being awkward which was not the case at all. Off we go!
So nice to enjoy a tour of Seoul by night. Yummy rice cakes come to mummy. Chicken skewers anyone? We’ve been wandering the streets of Seoul for around 1.5 hour, stopping from time to time to eat little street food bites or get some explanations about a place or a shop, before stopping in a restaurant for a feast of pork belly grilled on the bbq accompanied by Soju. Would I have known how to properly roll my bite of super hot pork belly in a lettuce wrap with a little add-on of bbq cooked kimchi if I wasn’t with Jessie? I don’t think so. Would I have known how to properly pour Soju? I don’t think so either. And for that it was a definitely worthwile experience. The only drawback if you ask me is that we did not went to proper local neighbourhoods. We stayed in the Myeong-dong and Insadong areas which are pretty touristic and which I already visited the day before. I would have loved to dig further. But still, discovering a place with a local is definitely not the same as discovering it by yourself.
Ok, we are pretty full now and smell like bbq pigs (that bbq pork was very yummy but feels like we cannot get rid of the grilled bbq scent, it’s all over our clothes ahah) plus we have been walking for almost 3h. Time to say byebye to Jessie and go to our hotel. The tour is definitely worth trying for first-timers in Seoul who don’t know what to do, where to go and what to eat.
