Monthly Top 5: new brunches in Hong Kong

May 26th 2017

By Delphine

We never have enough of those pleasant Sunday brunches, right? Especially in HK where it’s such a tradition, along with the Star Ferry and LKF Happy Hours. Almost every restaurant has its special Sunday Menu. Here is my selection of brand new ones. You can choose depending on your mood.

GAUCHO: let’s go to Argentina
We waited for it, here it is: Gaucho finally launched its brunch and all the family is very happy. Not only dishes are delicious but they also have a kids playroom with games, toys and funny outfits. They also have drawings on their menu and eat for free under 4 y.o. While children go and play let’s enjoy the menu. It starts with 5 different unlimited appetizers. I never have enough of these savory ceviche and empanadas. But be careful, the 300g Ancho is coming next and you won’t be able to resist. So juicy and tender, it comes with homemade big French fries. Vegetarian? No worries, the seabream risotto is perfect. On the buffet counter, you will find a couple of desserts, from the guiltiest (chocolate brownie) to the lightest (fresh fruits). All of this sprinkled with Veuve Cliquot. My little Calamity Jane and us could stay there until dusk.

SPIGA: head to Milano
Opened this year, the new LHT Tower Italian restaurant didn’t wait long before launching its brunch. Modern atmosphere, huge and bright room, large tables or small booths, this place has something for everyone. On the different buffet tables: various salads, antipasti, cold cuts, seafood, cheese, roasting lamb, soups and pasta of the day are waiting for us. I was afraid of the coming pizza after this. Surprisingly, I finished faster than expected. Light and crunchy they are all perfect. Keep some space for the desserts. Tiramisu, panna cotta and fruits salad are perfect with the ristretto.

The bill: 388HK$ buffet + plat /+160HK$ free flow Prosecco, beer, cocktails et vins /+260HK$ free flow champagne
Opening hours: Sunday: noon-3pm

MAK MAK: Thailand in your plate
Small thai restaurant, hidden behind a secret door at the Landmark, Mak Mak now offers its brunch every Sunday. Menu is fun with a list of items you just have to tick, like in a Dim Sum place. For less than 300HK$ you can order as many dishes as you want which will be served at your table. You can’t go wrong with the nems and crab cakes. Neither with the famous Tom Yum soup nor the pomelo salad. Currys and woks compete well. Just try, order, order again, try something else, and end with the traditional sticky rice mango or the pineapple carpaccio with dragon fruit sherbet.

METROPOLITAIN: traditional European brunch
Our favorite restaurant in SYP has launched its new brunch: we go right away. On the menu, the best of the western brunches. Eggs Benedict, Florentine, Provençale or even better « Taylor-made ». You build it the way you want. Omelette, poached, sunny-side, scrambled, with bacon, avocado, salmon, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausage… depending on your mood. With a smoothie or a fresh juice, one bagel if you’re very hungry, and please don’t skip the dessert. The chocolate waffle, the maple syrup pancake or the crepe flambée are super comforting. All of these are at mini price for a perfect family Sunday.

The bill: Œufs Bénédicte : 98HK$, œufs sur mesure avec 2 accompagnements : 88HK$. Jus pressés : 48HK$. Desserts : 68HK$.
Opening hours: 9 :30am-3pm

WHISK: 5 stars at tiny price
The restaurant on the 5th floor has been totally renewed and we say Bravo. No stress, you will still find the Free-flow Moët et Chandon option for 250HK$ only, the unlimited oysters and shells, the buffet featuring fresh and colorful salads, cold cuts and other items, a sushi bar and the huge cheese and desserts private room (hard to skip that one). So, what’s new? Blow-torched Wagyu beef, a carving station, pan fried foie-gras and individual main courses (I truly recommend the eggs benedicts with lobster). But moreover, lower price tag which falls to 498HK$ only. A big decrease, when quality has not!
