La Saison by Jacques Barnachon : when a Tasting Menu sings perfection

« Woooow I feel like I’ve just been transported to France in the middle of autumn » said my dear and loving husband after the first spoonful of his cep and girolle veloute. To which I added « it’s amazingly delicious! ». This was only the beginning of a festival of flavours to come. The ‘foie gras’ with caramelized figs (the chef’s speciality) deserves a star on its own, the lobster ravioli with yuzu jelly, partridge confit with Brussel sprout and cep fondue, scallops with sea urchin butter on a bed of creamy fennel, ginger and coriander poached John Dory filet were equally high contenders….. A beautifully orchestrated procession of 8 flawless courses, each arriving ‘sous cloche’ (the French metal bell shaped serving dish).
The chef and his cooks are constantly busy in the open kitchen. The waiters are attentive to your every need without being overbearing. The Chef will cater to any special needs or requests (“ I would like this dish without this or that and I’m allergic to such an such”), you can start with drinks on the large terrace facing the courtyard and finish with coffee on the smaller one facing the street. A chic menu, a relaxed atmosphere.

However do bear in mind that if you want to make the best of the ceps and girolles, scallops or partridge, you’ll need to hurry up. Not only do courses change every 3 weeks, the main ingredients composing the menu change every 3 months according to seasonality (thus the name of the restaurant). All produce is directly imported from France, and are used almost immediately. The French Michelin starred Chef, Jacques Barnachon, opened his restaurant in Hong Kong less than a year ago, for us it was an impeccable experience all the way to the miniature deserts (even if you can’t possibly eat another thing, you mustn’t leave without trying the mini madeleines). I can’t wait for the next big celebration or any excuse to go back there!
