Nestled in the heart of Thailand, far from the bustling streets of Bangkok and the familiar shores of Phuket and Koh Samui, I recently discovered a charmingly off-the-beaten-path property: InterContinental Khao Yai Resort. For those of us looking for a refreshing change of scenery, this destination is a delightful surprise.

A short flight from Hong Kong followed by a 90-minute drive through the night brought me to this retreat, just a touch off the radar for most international travelers. As someone always on the lookout for unique getaways, I was excited to find that Khao Yai, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a serene escape into nature without the usual tourist throngs.

Arriving in the early hours of the morning, my first impression was the warm welcome I received – a speedy in-room check-in ensured I could swiftly transition from a long-haul flight to a cozy bed, complete with midnight snacks that were just what I needed. Despite the early hour, I was instantly enveloped in the resort's charm.

Set on a sprawling 100-acre estate, the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort marries the beauty of its natural surroundings with whimsical design elements that make it particularly family-friendly. The property is an imaginative homage to Thailand’s railway history, with 19 repurposed railcars transformed into luxurious suites and villas.

Staying in one of these railcars felt like stepping into a nostalgic dream, where vintage touches meet modern comfort. My Railcar Suite, inspired by the Chiang Mai station, was a perfect retreat – from its polished wood furnishings to the private pool overlooking the jungle, every detail made me feel both relaxed and enchanted.

For families, the resort’s design is a playful adventure. Kids will love the whimsical railcar rooms, complete with bunk beds and station signboards, turning every moment into a journey back in time. The Kids’ Club, also housed in a railcar, is a wonderland of activities ranging from nature walks to creative workshops, ensuring that younger guests are entertained throughout their stay.

Beyond the resort, the magic of Khao Yai National Park awaits. Whether it’s birdwatching, trekking to waterfalls, or hoping to catch a glimpse of the park’s resident elephants, the park offers a rich tapestry of experiences. It’s a well-developed sanctuary with winding roads and guiding signs, making it accessible for all kinds of explorers. And just a short drive away, the GranMonte Vineyard and Winery offers a taste of Thailand’s burgeoning wine industry amidst stunning landscapes.

With the area being still largely unexplored by international tourists – despite being a popular weekend getaway for Bangkok residents, you’ll likely find yourself dining at the resort. But fear not, they have you covered. The main restaurant, Somying’s Kitchen serves breakfast and a delightful array of Thai and international dishes throughout the day. I cannot resist the appeal of a good old Club Sandwich and had a very solid one during my stay, while the rest of my meals were Thai-oriented and if you’re like me, a Thai food lover, their menu has what it takes to please your tastebuds.

For a more refine mail, Poirot, named after Agatha Christie’s famous detective in a nod to the famous Murder on the Orient Express novel, serves French cuisine in a railcar setting that echoes the elegance of a first-class dining car. Occasional themed murder mystery dinners add a playful touch to the experience – perfect for a special night out. What’s more, the Papillon Bar next door invites you to a pre- or post-dinner tipple.

Every corner of the resort has been thoughtfully designed to cater to relaxation and recreation. The Back on Track Spa, situated in a repurposed railcar, offers indulgent treatments inspired by Thai traditions. I’m lucky to enjoy massages quite often and can testify that the Thai massage I enjoyed there was one top notch. Booking it on the morning following my red-eye flight was probably the best idea, it made me feel rejuvenated and unlock the many tensions I had in my body.

What’s more, a small but charming pool near Somying’s Kitchen provides a perfect spot for unwinding, while the nearby lakes and walking trails invite exploration.

For anyone based in Hong Kong, the InterContinental Khao Yai Resort offers an easy escape to a different side of Thailand, perfect for a family getaway or a refreshing break from the usual tropical destinations. It’s a place where relaxation meets adventure, and where every corner tells a story.
