How to make the most of Le French May whether you are a firstimer or a family?

Le French May is right around the corner (here our interview of CEO, Julien-Loic Garin, for an insider look at the festival’s backstage) and even though we’d love to make the most of this unique cultural festival, we sometimes feel a bit lost and not sure how to navigate the 120 programs. We’ve decided to speak with the team in order to come-up with suggestions on how to make the most of this Hong Kong’s cultural life landmark whether you are a firstimer or a family.

FIRSTIMERS

There is, I think, a common belief among people (no matter their nationalities) that Le French May is quite elitist. Cliché says the festival’s team!

We have a great focus on developing accessibility of our programs. Education is at the core of what we do: meet-up and Q&A with the artists, guided tours of our exhibitions, educational booklets … We are working hard on making French culture more accessible. This is also a reason why we introduce less traditional arts such as hip-hop dance or modern art such as this year our Niki de Saint Phalle’s exhibition. And we always make sure to also host activities in public spaces such as the racecourse or shopping malls. “

How to make the most of Le French May whether you are a firstimer or a family?
The Niki de Saint Phalle’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong definitely is a highlight of this year. Accessible in terms of cost – admission is actually free of charge – but also in terms of content: monumental and colorful sculptures and installations advocating for women empowerment. An easy approach to contemporary art.

The team has also round-up for us 3 shows that are a great proof of the festival’s diversity and are accessible for less than a HKD 500:

DANCE
Bach Studies – I fall, I fly, I melt by Benjamin Millepied & L.A. Dance Project

How to make the most of Le French May whether you are a firstimer or a family?
Inspired by the depth and complexity of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, Millepied explores the Partita for Violin No. 2 in D Minor by applying the compositional techniques of counterpoint, fugue, and canon to choreography.

MUSIC

The show is a sensory journey through the music of Berlioz, Roussel, Hersant, poetry and painting. It is a very unique show doing its Asian premiere on the occasion of the festival.

CIRCUS
Julien Cottereau Plays Carte Blanche

How to make the most of Le French May whether you are a firstimer or a family?
This clown-mime is transporting the audience in a happy place where his naivety, his charm and absurdity will surely bring you to use your zygomatic.

FAMILIES

Culture definitely is a great deal when it comes to educate children and teenagers and spend quality family time together and for this reason, Le French May’s teams are working hard on offering a choice of shows and activities that will please both the kiddos and their parents.

One of the festival’s highlight is its Education and Outreach program including several masterclasses and workshops for all ages.

3 shows you might wanna check:

DANCE

How to make the most of Le French May whether you are a firstimer or a family?

An original ensemble piece exploring the cross-cultural influences of North African dance and contemporary hip hop. Acrobatics, rotations of continuous heads, and physical power, these are the spectacular movements that let dancers push and pull, tug and heave, spin and flip, spring and collapse, in a rhythmic odyssey that draws audiences into a vibrant adventure of dance fusion that is at the same time modern and fundamentally anchored in the traditions of Moroccan society.

How to make the most of Le French May whether you are a firstimer or a family?
Hikikomori, the shelter is a futuristic story about fitting in and finding your place. The play uses a unique and original sound design that offers audiences three different viewpoints to see and hear about the same story.
