The MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau 2022 unveils new stars in Hong Kong, including two restaurants promoted from one to two stars

Since its inaugural edition in 2009 which saw Lung King Heen become the world’s first Chinese restaurant to be awarded three Michelin stars, the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau has seen quite a few historic moments.

In 2010, Tim Ho Wan was awarded one star and therefore became the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant. In 2012, 8½ Otto e Mezzo – Bombana was the first ever Italian restaurant outside of Italy to be awarded three Michelin Stars, demonstrating that Hong Kong truly is a world-class culinary capital. That same year, chef Vicky Lau became the first female chef to lead a Michelin-starred restaurant in Hong Kong. She is still the only one as of today and her two-star restaurant Tate Dining Room never fail to impress. In 2019, exactly 10 years after its Hong Kong debuts, the famous guide put another cuisine under the spotlight with awarding New Punjab Club a Michelin Star and therefore making it the world’s first Punjabi restaurant to crack the list. Last but no least, the 2021 edition saw the begining of the Hong Kong Green Star which recognises restaurants that are championning sustainability and Roganic was the first Hong Kong restaurant to claim this new distinction.

As Hong Kong’s F&B industry continues to battle harsh restrictions, showing the same resilience it has demonstrated over the past two years, the MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong & Macau has just unveiled the 2022 stars. A selection that “demonstrates the very high gastronomic level, the great diversity, the talent and the know-how of chefs that food lovers can appreciate in Hong Kong and Macau” says Gwendal Poullenec, MICHELIN Guide International Director.

This 14th edition of the MICHELIN Guide for Hong Kong sees nine restaurants clinching their first star – seven restaurants did in 2021, and two restaurants promoted to two stars – same as last year. The only surprise from this year’s ceremony is probably that no restaurant has been promoted from two to three stars despite a rumour that has been spreading in the city over the past few weeks.

Hong Kong today counts seven three-star restaurants, 12 two-star restaurants and 52 one-star restaurants. Octavium and Yan Toh Heen are promoted to two stars while Belon, CHAAT, Hansik Goo, IM Teppanyaki & Wine, Mono, Seventh Son, Sushi Wadatsumi, Whey and Yon Fu are the nine proud new awardees of the one-Michelin-star list.
