SAMA : THE best Japanese curry soup in town

No no, you read correctly, we are indeed talking about JA-PAN-ESE Curry. Forget your Udon, Ramen, Sushi or sashimi. Over here it’s all about the curry soup! Different from its Indian or Thai counterparts, this dish is a specialty from Sapporo. At SAMA’s, recently opened in the heart of Noho, the chef follows Japanese tradition religiously by importing the curry base directly from the HQ in Sapporo.

It’s deliciously fragrant. All the soups are “customized”, in other words everyone gets their dish “tailor-made”.  Step 1: choose your base: tomatoes, coconut or shrimp broth. Step 2: choose your ingredients: chicken, vegetables, seafood, pork, beef…. or different ready-made options. Step 3: add as many ingredients as you want: aubergine, egg, asparagus, broccoli, squid… Step 4: choose your spice level on a scale of 1 to 30. Quite the sissy, I went for 7. Good move, it was plenty spicy for my European palate. If you want to become a champion and get your photo on the wall, try the “30 contest” and finish your level 30 bowl to the very last spoonful (they use spoons here not chopsticks), at your own risk! To finish off, don’t think about dessert, there aren’t any. Go for a sake or sweet lassi instead, should you still have room, it’s quite a portion. As for the décor, the owner wanted to create a cheerful atmosphere with fun paintings around cartoon bears. All in all, a really nice lunch break with reasonable prices.
