Plaza 66 – home to luxury in the heart of Shanghai

If you follow us on Instagram you know it already, Hong Kong Madame was in Shanghai two weeks ago for the re-opening of Plaza 66. There was no way we would miss the biggest in mall luxury event in China!

And that was quite of a night indeed: VIP such as photographer David LaChapelle, edible art by award-winning pastry chef Janice Wong, in-store events (I must confess a huge crush for the Cartier boys and their crazy dancing) and a performance by Alicia Keys, definitely a beautiful and promising way to re-open this luxury landmark launched in 2001.

But why is Plaza 66 worth a visit if you are in Shanghai? Just because it is too much! By 2018, the number of Chinese millionaires is expected to surpass that of any other nation and by 2021 China is expected to be home of the most affluent households in the world*. Well, Plaza 66 is definitely looking to attract those clients and is a place like no other if you want to better understand who are those consumers and what they are looking for. Plus, I don’t know about you but I have that little game that I love, “if I was a rich girl”, where I visit shops that are way too much for me mentally pick the one piece that I would buy if I was a millionaire 5I also have that little game with houses and flats but that’s another story).

Welcoming Chinese flagship stores of more than 100 luxury fashion houses – Louis Vuitton (and it’s beautiful but very VIP lounge) / Dior / Fred / Hermes / Prada / Cartier / Balmain / Goyard - Plaza 66 is definitely a home to luxury. And more than just welcoming the brands, Plaza 66 is also home to 66 Showcase with exclusive pieces and collections.

I spent an afternoon wandering the alleys of the mall (which is pretty exhausting, luckily I also came across the Pierre Marcolini’s shop and treated myself to some exquisite chocolates) and play my little “if I was a rich girl” game to finally come up with the ultimate pic: a Red Boxcalf Laced Barcelona Bag by Loewe, exclusive to Plaza 66 and limited to 18 pieces worldwide. Such a beauty!

Whether you are on a social exploration of Chinese consumers and trends, want to treat yourself to something exclusive or just feel like doing a bit of luxury window shopping, Plaza 66 is worth a visit.
