Our favourite books for little Hong Kong gourmets

If you’re a frequent Hong Kong Madame reader you should know it by now, I love food. Not only am I a foodie who love nothing more than eating out and visiting all the new restaurants in town but also revisiting all-time favourites, I also love watching movies and tv shows about the culinary world and reading books and articles related to gastronomy. My other half is actually the same and you know the saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the three”, so it seems like our little one is already a mini foodie. I’m not gonna lie, I’m thrilled about it and I’m trying to nurture her love for food. We’re taking her out to the restaurant with us, we’re cooking with her to pass on the appetite for fresh, unprocessed food, we’re teaching her the names of fruits and vegetables and we’re reading stories about food and food traditions. Speaking of food traditions, as we are French but living in Hong Kong, I believe it’s important she also “learn” about the local food culture and I find these books to be among our favs when it comes to exploring Hong Kong food scene with a toddler.

I Love You, Little Dumpling
by Conny Wong

There is something quintessential Hong Kong about eating dumplings and from Siu Mai and Xialongbao to Har Gow and Char Siu Bao, this delicious book features all our favourite local dim sum in the form of adorable little dumpling characters.

I love the gentle rhyme of the book which I can now almost read by heart –  it starts with “My little dumpling, sweet and scrumptious as can be”, because it truly is one of our favourite when it comes to bedtime routine and we’ve been reading it countless times.

Available on mini love tales, at Bookazine and other selected book stores and retailers around town.

I Love You, Little Boba
by Conny Wong

With “I Love You, Little Dumpling” being such a favourite on our bookshelf - since the little one was born almost two years ago, I was very excited for its sister book “I Love You , Little Boba” to be released late 2021. Written by the same author and combining once again the cutest illustrations with a sweet gentle rhyme – I love the “You’re the magic that makes my milk tea right” part, it is another delicious book that celebrates both your unconditional love for your kids and Hong Kong love for bubble tea.

Available on mini love tales, at Bookazine and other selected book stores and retailers around town.

Matcha Moon
by Jo Soo-Tang

The founder of social enterprise Cookie Smiles and a long-time philanthropist whose volunteer work includes teaching kids from under-resourced communities how to swim - with the Splash Foundation, Jo Soo-Tang has recently published her first book: “Matcha Moon”.

More than a just a story about matcha cookies, Matcha Moon is a story of love between two siblings who embark on a mission to use their passion for cooking to help those less fortunate. Cherry on the cake, the proceeds from the sales of the book are going towards apprenticeship and charity causes.

Big Cities Little Foodies Hong Kong
by Cheryl Yau Chepusova

Big Cities Littles Foodies is a series of books that celebrate the food and culture of the culinary destinations that are Hong Kong, Tokyo and Taipei. The Hong Kong edition features classic local dishes ranging from dim sum to pineapple buns and egg waffles.

Not only it is a cute book with beautiful illustrations, it’s also a great tool to start teaching counting from 1 to 10 to your toddler. Cherry on the cake, each dish as its name written in both English and Cantonese.
