By Delphine

April is usually synonym of: « Damned, I have to start my summer diet”. Don’t depressed and trust me, eating healthy and light can be super fun. The proof with Jar Jar Beam opened in Sheung Wan a few months ago. We love the idea: salads, juices, smoothies and soups in a jar. A lot more beautiful and appealing than in plastic boxes.

Inside, everything is super fresh, super healthy, absolutely no sugar, preservatives, or artificial flavors added! Lewis selects its products depending on the season, and choose only the ones which give energy and not big bottom. Kale, quinoa, beets, avocado, nuts, tofu… plenty of vitamins! Dressings are all natural, freshly made with yogurt and olive oil. Salads are prepared in front of you, you just add the dressing, shake well (after the post on IG of course), and enjoy. Delicious! Moreover they all have funny names such as: Rocket Rocks, Quinoa Me Softly or Avocado Bomb!
On the juice menu you can find the Sweet Apple Pie, Fantastic Green Four and Carrot Go. Number of calories is mentioned but as everything is light and healthy, don’t bother too much.

All of these at very affordable price. Believe me, you will shortly become an
addict!

Address: 195 Queen's Road Central
Phone: (852) 9615 9246
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JarJarBeam/
Opening Hours: 8am-6pm
Bill:

Fresh juices and smoothies : 35-78HK$

Salads : 58-78HK$

Soups : 35-78HK$

      by Aude

I must confess, every dinner at one of the venue from Le Comptoir Group had me over excited. Why so? Because every time I am pretty sure that I will enjoy super yummy food in a stunning place. From Breton lobster at Bibo, Sheung Wan arty gem, to Brazilian/Japanese tapas at stunning Djapa, each of my recent dinner with them was a big crush. Imagine how I felt when I heard they just opened their 10-seats sushi counter on Hollywood Road!

Are you ready for a traditional Edomae sushi experience? I am! Edomae sushis? Particular type of sushis created by the Edo (old name for Tokyo) fast food businesses during the 1820’s.

Umi is a beautiful little den, the den of Chef Yukio Kimijima. Seat at the incredible Japanese wooden counter and get ready to enjoy a unique and very private show. Chef Yukio Kimijima is just so nice, feel free to ask him as many questions as you want … this is part of the experience.

“Can I have the menu?” Oh darling, don’t bother with that. Umi is an Omakase experience meaning that you leave it up to the Chef. Believe me, you won’t regret it. Forget your traditional makis and sushis, those 16 dishes (yes it is a 16 dishes menu but no worries you can handle it, one sushi stands for one dish) are nothing like you ever tasted before. Or at least it was completely new to me!
Dishes one to four are the appetizers. A truffle rice to open your appetite, an incredibly surprising Hirame (halibut) marinated in plum juice, abalone with abalone liver sauce that had me reconsider my negative views on abalone and a divine Hokkaido scallop wrapped in a seaweed. Of courses, everything is made in front of you by Chef Kimijima himself. A very precise dance that have you very excited thinking of the next dish to come. Then come the sushis, dishes five to fourteen. Drop your chopsticks, the traditional way of eating those is with your hand (remember Edomae sushis were fast food at first). Grab it on the counter, because yes the Chef served them directly on the counter, put in in your mouth and eat it in one go. Also make sure to do it in less than five seconds. Why so? Just because it is the way to do it.
Sushis will take you from Sayori (Japanese halfbeak) to Snapper and a surprisingly sweet Kuruma Ebi (Japanese shrimp). You will also enjoy three different pieces of Tuna: Akami, the chef favourite with a vibrant red colour, Chu-Toro and the famous fatty O-Toro. Each and every piece of fish is super fresh and has a very unique taste. Do not forget to take a sip of matcha from time to time. Or go for the sake, even better. The uni roll, miso soup with clam, egg and the homemade mochi will have you close a dinner like no other.

      By Aude

Autumn is definitely here: cooler days, early sunsets … Be prepared, winter is coming. And guess what? I am pretty excited about it! Yes because when I hear Autumn-Winter I am thinking: truffles, scallops, hot chocolate, oysters, comforting dishes … In a nutshell, I am thinking FOOD!
Hey, what’s wrong with treating yourself to comfort food? Nothing right? Here are my fav spots for autumn dishes this year.

Le Bistro Winebeast

This Frenchy spot in Wan Chai is probably one of my fav spot in town. No matter the season, I just love the so tasty and colorful cuisine of Chef Johan Ducroquet. Been there for their newly released Autumn-Winter menu last week and once again, I had a blast.

The confit onion tart is just … super yummy! Crispy base, melting onions confit and perfectly poached egg … the ultimate autumn dish. For the main, I can only tell one thing: choice is hard! Confit beef paleron and pan-fried foie gras, veal tenderloin, confit farmhouse pork belly (perfectly caramelized and so tender and juicy), roasted half-pigeon (is there anything that says autumn better than a roasted pigeon?), Pithiviers of quail and foie gras – I must confess a real crush on this signature dish …
To pair with a glass of wine (or several)!

The Hong Kong Madame special crush: the so fresh and yet so Christmassy Poached Mandarine with star anise, chesnut mousse, meringue, ginger bread and pistachio ice-cream. Make sure to save some room for this dessert! And the super reasonable prices …

https://www.wine-beast.com/le-bistro
G/F & 1/F, Tai Yip Building
141 Thomson Road, Wan Chai

La Table de Patrick

Did you know that behind famous Chez Patrick Delis in town was Chef Patrick Goubier? And did you know that Chef Patrick also have a fine dining restaurant La Table de Patrick, in Central?
I love the casual bistro environment of the delis but sometimes I am not against going fancy! And what is fancier – and yummier – than a full truffle diner? La Table de Patrick’s autumn tasting diner is upgradable to a full Alba truffle feast, a reasonable feast I must say since Chef Patrick Goubier offers shavings of the coveted nugget at cost price (based on market rate). Are you in for a truffle feast?

The Hong Kong Madame special crush: the Morel and black truffle egg foam with bread soldiers. Such a regressive dish!

http://www.chezpatrick.hk
6/F, Cheung Hing Commercial Building
37-43 Cochrane Street, Central

On Dining

I kinda wait eagerly for every new dish and new menu from Michelin-starred Chef Philippe Orrico. Egg has been one of his signature – if you haven’t try his 63 degrees slow cooked egg yet, you are definitely missing something - and I cannot wait to try his new dish: the Scramble Eggs combine with risotto or Tagliolini.

But you know, I am feeling very trufflely lately and cannot recommend enough the Sea Urchin Tagliolini with lobster emulsion and a generous dose of white Alba truffle.

The Hong Kong Madame special crush: Jazz and Cocktails nights on Thursdays!

http://www.ontop.hk/
29/F
18 On Lan Street, Central

      By Vanessa, our Fitness Editor

Odinson is located at the Pemberton Building, multi-floor wellness hub in Sheung Wan. Their motto: a perfect balance for mind and body. To reach it, a lovely and peaceful boutique fitness studio on two floors, where they mix yoga, personal training and wellness with a juice and salad bar.

So why such a mix? For the crossed benefits.
Personal training and yoga are often perceived as very different activities and not for the same kind of exercisers. But in fact they totally benefit to each other. While personal training builds strength and achieves physical results, yoga simultaneously conditions the body and mind for overall personal wellness. Then regarding nutrition, I don’t think I have to explain why and how it helps your overall wellness anyway…
That being said, don’t panic, if you prefer yoga over personal training or the contrary, of course you have the choice!

So what can you do there?
Experienced yoga teachers lead intimate 90 min group classes including Acrovinyasa, Ashtanga, Fly (hammock) yoga, Forrest Inspired Yoga, Prenatal Yoga and more. They also offer meditation sessions and workshops outside of their practice.
Dedicated trainers lead small group high-intensity classes including the female only Wonder Woman class and Total Body Conditioning class (mix of weight training, circuit and strongman training).

I tried for you the “Happy hips and hamstrings” yoga by Charlotte Johnson. Charlotte being an experienced and patient yoga teacher, no surprise, the class was great. It really helped my sore lower body and we’ve been given many options during the class to adapt the poses to our own flexibility and stretching needs. The studio is very Zen and bright thanks to big windows, so you can enjoy the daylight or beautiful view during your practice.

I couldn’t write about Odinson without telling you about their amazing yoga mats… The grip and cushioning is just perfect, giving you comfort and the best conditions, no matter what’s your level. But above all, some lines and designs, harmoniously decorating it are a precious guide. It’s sometimes hard to be sure your feet, hands are in the right position, both sides at the same level. You can now forget that problem with those Liforme mats. Addicted? Don’t worry, you can get one at Odinson, the exclusive retailer in Hong Kong.

I moved then to the floor above to discover a bright open training space complemented by colorful murals designed by a graffiti artist. I enjoyed there a juice after my class at Mr. Green Juice organic juicery and eatery. Cold-pressed juices, nut milks, soups and salads (raw and vegan friendly), but also some protein shakes exclusive to Odinson: in a word everything you need after your workout!

Private sessions
Monthly subscription of 4 / 8 / 12 or unlimited private 60 min training or yoga sessions: HK$ 3,600 / HK$ 6,800 / HK$ 9,600 / HK$ 12,000 (all packages include unlimited group yoga and fitness classes)
Drop-in 60 min private sessions: HK$ 1,000

Group sessions
Group classes packs of 10 / 20 / 30 sessions: HK$ 2,750 / 5,000 / 6,750.
Special price for a limited time and new clients, unlimited group classes: HK$ 2,000 per month
Drop-in single session group classes: HK$ 300

Odinson, 11F The Pemberton, 22 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan
odinson.asia

      By Delphine

The Locofama and Sohofama team is back with Supafama.
At first glance, the space is a just like another fastfood. Selling sandwiches, salads and juices to take-away or quickly eat on a small table. The restaurant mascot, a red and black super-hero is all over the place. Nothing really takes your mind to a place that is especially health conscious.

BUT...it is all organic (or 90%): beef, pork, fish, (we did say “organic”, not vegetarian, vegan or raw), vegetables, fruit juice, smoothies, tea and coffee. It is fresh and tasty. Veggies, rice, lentils are perfect to add in the Supasalad boxes.

If you're looking for something quick, inexpensive, free from pesticides and hormones, non-GM produce, this is your place to go!

A piece of advice: The space is tiny, so take-away is better.
Tiniest of problems: The choices are limited to 4 salads and 2 sandwiches for now. We hope that with time, more items will be added to the recipe.

More info: http://supafood.co/

Hours: Mon-Saturday: noon - 8.30pm

Address: 1 Jervois St, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
Phone: +852 2812 6088

Brunch:
Supa salad boxes: from 88 to 118HKD
Smoothies: 68HKD
Supa sandwiches: 48 or 58HKD
