How to help my child become calmer: my fun relaxation practice as a Sophrologist

You feel your 6 to 12 year old child needs to calm down and refocus? You would like him to enjoy slowing down (for his sanity and let’s be honest for yours too)? You find him tired and edgy after a long busy day at school? Try a well loved sophrology game: the “sound collector”.

What to do:

  • You may first want to ask him if he is willing to join the “sound collector gang”
  • According to child age and personality, you might want to imagine what a sound collector actually looks like, exaggerate, have fun!
  • Then gently sit close to each other, close your eyes and shush! Listen! In silence! To all the sounds. You are sound collectors, remember? Become aware of sounds you know well, those you find surprising, those far and those close, even very close, why not even from your own bodies. Shush! Listen to the silence and its sounds! With the curiosity of a collector.
  • After a minute or so, you might want to share. Enjoy sounds you both heard and be surprised by the ones you haven’t.
  • Finally, ask your child how he feels. Is his mind a little more quiet? His body a little more relaxed?

By taking a few moments to become a sound collector, you have helped your child to slow down, to come back here and now. It’s a fun way to discover the benefits of being quiet and to better enjoy calm. After a few practice together, you might even encourage your child to practice (also) by himself when ever he needs too.

Wishing you many more calm and fun moments,

Celine

Sophrology is similar to mindfulness. It works on the basis of being in the present moment, however, it is more focused on relaxation and feelings of pleasure. Very well established in France, yet fairly new to HK, Hong Kong Madame is happy to share more French positive vibes to help us go through our busy lives feeling a little more relaxed and happy!
